Learn About Terramation

A Sacred Return

Since the dawn of civilization, humanity has understood a simple, profound truth: all life arises from the elements of the earth, and eventually, all life returns to them.

This sacred cycle is a spiritual endowment shared across cultures and faiths.

“Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”
- Ecclesiastes 12:7

In modern times, we typically choose between burial or cremation. Traditional burial requires access to suitable land, while cremation is an energy-intensive process that transforms the majority of a body into atmospheric emissions.

A Gentler Third Path

We offer a more natural alternative known as Natural Organic Reduction, or Terramation.

This process honors the bond you shared with your pet by gently returning their remains to the earth as life-giving soil.

At Paws Into Petals, your pet is placed within a specialized, climate-controlled vessel alongside select organic materials.

Within this enclosed system, we precisely regulate heat, oxygen, and moisture to support a natural biological transformation.

Over 8 to 10 weeks, your pet’s body is respectfully converted into nutrient-rich earth—honoring their memory by giving back to the natural world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to the soil produced during the Terramation process?

There are several meaningful ways to use the nutrient-rich soil to memorialize your pet. If you wish to use the soil for a personal garden or landscaping memorial, you may receive up to 19 liters of soil from our facility. Any remaining soil is donated to local conservation partners, such as OKC Beautiful for community landscaping projects or Martin Nature Park for woodland restoration.

Does the Terramation process have an odor?

No. The process is carefully managed to ensure there are no odors associated with it.

How does Terramation differ from Aquamation?

While Aquamation is more environmentally friendly than traditional cremation, it is still a chemical and energy-intensive process. Aquamation uses a combination of heat, pressure, and chemicals (potassium and sodium hydroxide) to dissolve remains.
Terramation is a more natural, low-energy alternative. It occurs over a longer period at lower temperatures and pressures, relying on natural microbes to do the work. This method requires very little electricity—only what is needed to rotate the remains and introduce oxygen. Both Aquamation and Terramation are similar in that multiple pets may be placed in the vessel at the same time.

How long does the Terramation Process take?

The process typically takes between 8 and 10 weeks. This timeline can vary slightly based on the season, as the natural process may take a bit longer when ambient temperatures are low.

How will I know when my pet's soil is ready for pickup?

Once the process is complete, you will receive a text message with a link to schedule a pickup appointment at your convenience.

What materials are used in the Terramation process besides my pet's remains?

To facilitate the natural decomposition process, we use organic "brown" materials. The most common materials used are wood in the form of sawdust, shavings, or chips. Other suitable organic materials, such as leaves, cardboard, paper, or grass, may also be used.
